History
It was in July 1987 when Achilles N. Vardakis, the holder of an MSc in Computer
Science from the University of California, realized the growing importance of information technology in the maritime business and decided to found his first company, Computer Expert Systems Ltd, the ancestor of
SES, in the heart of the shipping and banking district of the port of Piraeus.
Back in the 1960's, Mr. Vardakis had been involved in innovative computer research
projects and information technology applications at the University of California (Berkeley) and in a pioneering artificial
intelligence research at Stanford University in Palo Alto (Silicon Valley) later to be acknowledged as the first artificial intelligence
system. Moreover, he was a consultant and developer of the computer language NILIAC.
Returning to Greece, in 1973, he supervised the computer management section and designed all information systems, and later the administration sector, of a major ship management and ship brokerage firm, THENAMARIS
(SHIPS MANAGEMENT) INC., before leaving in order to set up his own company and pursue his personal endeavours.
The move came at the right time. Mr. Vardakis and his team of software developers
worked round the clock to develop pioneering computer applications for shipping.
Considerable help was provided by the fact that SES, operating globally, had major
maritime companies
as clients from which priceless advice and input was drawn.
The consistently professional attitude of SES is evident in each individual project, from the smallest to the largest-scale, from simple implementations to full "one-off" customisations and is reflected in the goodwill of our Clients who would readily testify to SES’s professionalism.

Milestones
It is worth noting that SES was the first company that:
- Developed Shipping Software under fourth generation language (4GL) ORACLE (1987).
- Developed software under ORACLE RDBMS Ver 5.0 and Tools (SQL*FORMS Ver 2.0) (1987).
- Introduced Shipping Software under Windows environment (1994).
- Offered quality-assured with "off-the-shelf" reliability, yet open to customisation, IT products for the maritime business (1994).
- Provided Complete and Fully Integrated ship management systems for ashore and on board operations.
- Developed intuitive shipping software, aiming at zero computer knowledge and zero training as part of a fully parametric system immediately navigable by Clients and fully customisable to satisfy a company's particular needs, most important for an environment such as onboard ships.
- Developed system for ISM Code Compliance allowing ship managers to organise, follow up and audit all ISM documents and requirements as part of a total ship-to-shore solution for managing safety.
Because of its dedication and remarkable achievements SES has been certified, awarded and globally acknowledged throughout the entire Shipping Community.
